Bright Horizons is the Early Years and Childcare Workforce Development Team for Wiltshire. We work on behalf of the Wiltshire Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership to provide financial help with courses and qualifications for the counties childcare workforce, help people find a career in childcare, by providing information about current vacancies, as well as support employers with information about training and employment issues.

Types of Training

Most people welcome the opportunity to improve their skills through training and development opportunities and this can reward you with better motivated staff but also a more professional workforce.

Types of Training

When planning it is worth considering the 3 different types of training, which are:

1. Statutory- this is needed to ensure you comply with regulations and national standards, and this includes short courses such as first aid and child protection along with level 2 and 3 qualifications such as the NVQ CCLD.

2. Desirable- this is training that is desirable for both you and the employee but not necessarily a legal requirement and could include behaviour management courses.

3. Developmental- this training is seen as helping both employees career progression and ultimately developing their skills.

Costs/Course Fees

For many small businesses and childcare settings, who have limited budgets, you may expect staff to contribute to their own fees and in some cases take unpaid time off to attend the training. Settings need to be sure that such arrangements are fair with a reasonable balance between the employee and employers contribution/cost. Remember training grants can often be avaliable to help with course fees - See Wiltshire Training Grants page for further information on the training grants and incentives available to Ofsted registered childcare settings in Wiltshire.

Tip!

Why not send one or two members of staff on a training course/conference and then get them to share what they have learnt with the rest of the team.
